Hope

To start with, Pandora’s Box
is something which I assume all of us have heard about; this box contained all evils, including Hope. Now I do not know if hope is evil or good, is it situational or is it as per a man’s perspective?

For example, if a person commits suicide, will you call it courage or is it weakness, is it because of lack of hope from this life or a hope of a better next-life (if that really exists). Personally, I would call it weakness and helplessness, but my point now is Can lack of hope kill life? Is it that Evil?

Another Example: I wonder how many of you have read the story of “The Lady or the Tiger” (ask me if you haven’t, will be glad to share it), or seen the movie,”Before Sunset”, all these stories and movies are open ended, does the lover get the love of his/her life or is it an end, end to the story, end of their happy love life? Now the narrator leaves it to the reader/spectator, and puts a question, what do we expect or hope for them, a happy or a sad ending?

So could hope give life as well? Not just in stories, but in real life. If I talk about passing an exam, which I haven’t studied for, I still hope I will clear it (if miracles work) and to my surprise I do. On the contrary, if I would think, since I haven’t studied for it, how the hell can I pass it, leave scoring good, so I simply wouldn’t use my brains in writing the paper, simply sign and come out?

Now, is hope evil or good or does Hope have a Dual-personality?

I feel HOPE have +ve connotation... As it always makes individual mentally stable, it depends on his virtue to take use of this stability and work towards his goal diligently. It raises persons morale, but being good or evil depends on his morality. Actual evil is having low morality, having high or low morale doesn't matter...

I agree with daddhu, hope is what prevents someone from panic under a tense situation. It almost always works in favor of you, except some extreme cases when you hope against the hope for something to happen. Hope can both motivate you or drive you crazy! I wont say hope is evil, in fact I think hope is a good thing (maybe best of all things)

"Hope is necessary in every situation."

Hope is just the desire for things to go the way you would like them to.

Hope is never necessary. Although 'hoping' isn't necessarily a bad thing.

You could say that 'hoping' is bad as it can give illusions of fulfilling your desire, while hope itself cannot change the outcome of a situation itself.

But someone with hope is, I think, more liable to complete whatever situation it is that faces them, than someone without, only scarcely though.

For Example:Every night we go to bed,

we have no assurance to get up alive in the next morning

but still you have plans for the coming day

that's Hope...

Hope work as a capsule for ur hole life. Gives energy in unhappy time & complex position...

Let me categorize it this way:

Hope : There is hope, so there is no Me and there is no Us, no doubt that having a little hope keeps our spirits high and alive, in agreement with @knn

High Hope: As is said, anything in excess is not good, neither is hope. The more high you fly with hope, the harder you will fall.

False Hope: When there is 99% chance that somethings not going to happen but there is this 1% which gives you the spark and keeps you going. And as @bhavi said : hope itself cannot change the outcome of a situation itself.
In future, if 1% works, nothing like it, but if it doesnt, a person may not wish to hope any more or as @vinay said: may drive you crazy.

Again, @ bhavi: as a person sets goals and moves ahead in life, hope becomes a daily necessity, no matter how reasonable or logical we are, its the tiny little hope inside, which keeps you moving. :-)

Abe, how can you people talk about something so complicated like "HOPE".

well, @bhavi says a lot theoretical abt stuff like this.

According to me @bhavi, its must be "DOPE is necessary in every situation!". and HOPE comes along for free !!

Definitely Hope is situational. It is stand alone entity which has no shape or size hence it is not some "thing" to be classified as dual personality. Its actual boundaries are defined when it is adapted by some one. And then it is completely in individual hands to mold it.
@Anu: When you talk about High hopes or False hopes i think the adjectives are added when individual fails to define definition of "HOPE" in their life..
Everyone has heard when an individual fails in something...or cudn't foresee one .. they make comments "Hope is all we have now" which is somewhere linked spiritually as well when Anu says Miracle

Or you can say it depends on individuals perception... if you want to generalize everyone's behaviour, then it can have dichotomous character..

Very well written and lots of good comments too. Never thought anyone would analyse HOPE so much;-)
So the gist remains --- HOPE is something which keeps you going :-)
